PANEL 2
MIKE
Why up there? Isn’t that where Rother’s is?
ED
I made a promise to someone...
PANEL 4
MIKE
OOPS! Sorry!
ED
Ha...That’s okay
PANEL 5
ED
S-so, how many droids have been...terminated...around these parts?
MIKE
Oh...Uh...Quite a lot actually, especially since our solar panels are all busted, they’re the only reliable source of power.

Poor Ed xD
Congratulations on second prize! That’s really great when there where sooo many other comics in the contest. The part where you and that other one where 50/50 the whole time was stressfull xD
Thank you so much!! And I know @_@ I think that destroyed both myself and Nani DX AND OUR POOR READERS! The uncertainty was so painful XD; especially right in the final moments of the contest!
… Wait… so they never bothered to try to find a repair droid for the solar panels instead of smashing them open and taking out their power source?
That’s if any droids are programmed with the specs of repairing solar panels 😛 plus the cells of the solar panels could be damaged, and you would need complete replacements for those. So next best thing would be the power cells D:
If residential citizens could afford a medical bot that functions so long after the apocalypse, it stands to reason that there would be a bot designed to be a handyman or certified repair-all that is still in good working order… provided people haven’t killed it for it’s power source yet.
Apart from regular citizens didn’t afford a med droid 🙂 it’s not yet been revealed how Ed was acquired, nor the history of droids in this world. Also, I’ve never specified how long after this ‘apocalypse’ this time period is. And as I said, when droids are created, they are programmed for specific jobs. As there is not an large library of knowledge at their disposal any longer, it could be like telling a plumber to fix a rocket.
Did the local libraries go digital and/or get completely slagged in the apocalypse or something? For some reason, if those didn’t happen I don’t think that people would be entirely incapable of repairing solar panel unless the solar bits themselves were broken and cracked beyond being able to function.
O_o…
Which I did already suggest – “plus the cells of the solar panels could be damaged, and you would need complete replacements for those.”
Just a note, I have relations who worked on the development of solar panels, and have told me that solar panel cells are extremely difficult to get right, their manufacturing takes a LOT of work to create the perfect construction, which is why they are so expensive. We have cheap ones, but they do not last very long due to poor construction or bad material obtained during production to make them affordable to the general public (i.e. Solar Panelled garden lights).
Plus, all the places the characters are going to are real locations in England, and I’m pretty sure there are no large solar panel factories around that area where they would even be able to get working parts. Perhaps there is a big library about 20-30 miles in any direction, but this is a village, and I am pretty sure most libraries will not contain “how to fix solar panels for dummies”. Most of the information is stored online, or on computer systems.
I also never said people were incapable of fixing a solar panel, but to get what you need, such as 1) an engineer droid, 2) the knowledge to fix a solar panel, 3) solar panel components 4) components that not only fit their solar panels, but ones that also have the correct specifications needed, which could prove to be very difficult.
Only reliable source of power? Simply take a generator from an old car and build a mill at the next stream. Much more reliable, low tec and cheaper.
The only reason we have no 100% waterpowered electricity, is that the easy available maximum amount is not enough nowadays. Not a problem with such a small lowtec population.
Oh boy, I think I really need to make a Tethered FAQ XD And cheaper? I doubt finances is something they are too concerned about these days, it’s more like ‘get what ever you can get’. As for the current society, we do not know yet how long they have been there, what their circumstances are, how much available energy is around, or how they can acquire it. Other than the fact that droids seem to be the only source, perhaps that insinuates other sources have been drained. I’ve also indicated that this community is trying to find renewable energy by installing solar panels, they are trying to rebuild, but right now they need alternatives.
They have no regular money system, but in some informal way they seem to pay each other with workforce, food, shelter.
And I know “artistic freedom” with another easy energy source, like waterpower, the story would not work. But in the back it is still bothering my logical mind.
Like, why the heck are there no planes in “Stand Still Stay Silent”, another post-apocalyptic web comic. So you are not the only one with this problem. 😉
Still very good storys.
In regards to saying I have a problem, I’d like to mention that this is the start of the story, and please try not to make quick judgements. Something I want to do is show how different people react to this situation, and what people see as priority. I feel that a variety of situations and characters make a richer story all together, and hopefully make people think. Though to be fair, this is exactly what you are doing, so in some ways I am pretty darn happy with this outcome!
I really love stories like “The Road”, “The Last of Us”, “The Walking Dead” and very much enjoy the Fallout games too, not because of the post-apocalyptic theme, but because they make me curious as to how I may survive in those situations. Something I hope to achieve with Tethered 🙂
I am super happy you enjoy the story despite having a gripe with the renewable energy! 🙂 Please continue to read if you do, I’d love to know what you think of the story at the end, plus this type of feedback keeps me on my toes!
